Much of what makes our South African lifestyle so special is being able to enjoy the great outdoors. For atmosphere, nothing beats a set of romantic, billowing curtains, as seen in this fabulous patio setting in Franschhoek, the first of four amazing outdoor spaces we've found to inspire you this month (This one created by Jenny Mills Architects and Interiors).

These curtains serve a dual purpose: to keep harsh sunlight out when necessary and to provide all-important privacy. When selecting fabric opt for a practical solution such as a heavy white canvas,' says St Leger & Viney's managing director Gary Searle. 'You'll regret going for cotton, muslin or denim, as these are inclined to yellow in the sun.' Select a solution-dyed acrylic (SDA) canvas, which is UV- and stain-resistant, and specially manufactured for outdoor purposes. Treclean the fabric before your curtains are made up, to prevent residual shrinkage after your custom-made curtains have been fitted,' he says.
