We listen first. Then we lead.
Jenny Mills Architects is a Cape Town-based practice founded in 2003. We design high-end residential homes, wilderness lodges, and hospitality projects — across South Africa, across Africa, and for clients internationally.
Most architects arrive at a first meeting with a style. We arrive with questions. The homes and lodges we design are recognisable because they fit the people who commission them — built around how they actually live, work, and gather. That fit is what we are designing for. Everything else follows.
Jenny Mills founded her Cape Town practice in 2003. Before that, she built her early career at Stefan Antoni's office — one of the most demanding environments in Cape Town residential architecture — where she quickly distinguished herself and excelled.
She holds a B.A.S. and B.Arch. from the University of Cape Town. In 2007 she received the Cape Institute of Architects Award for Architecture, for a timber-rich beach house in Clifton that was contemporary without being cold, and site-specific without being imitative. The award is peer-voted, which is why it matters.
Two decades on, Jenny leads every JMA project personally. She is on site weekly. She is in the showroom choosing tiles. She is at the table with the cabinet maker. This is not a practice where the principal signs off on the concept and hands the rest to a junior team. Her involvement is the point.
"I feel that the trend towards authenticity and handcrafted elements will grow."
- Jenny Mills
The Studio
JMA operates from a studio on Bree Street in Cape Town's city centre. The team is deliberately small: Craig and Margaret have grown with the practice over many years, supported by a new generation of emerging talent and a network of trusted consultants, engineers, and contractors built over two decades of work across South Africa and beyond.
This structure means every client has direct access to Jenny. Nothing falls through the gaps. A bathroom detail receives the same attention as a roofline.
The Work
JMA designs high-end residential homes, wilderness lodges, and hospitality projects. Work ranges from new builds on challenging sites to renovations that grow — as they frequently do, once clients trust the process — into something closer to a complete new home or facility than first imagined.
The practice works across South Africa, with projects throughout the Western Cape, Gauteng, and the Northern Cape. JMA has also designed across Africa, including Namibia and Kenya, and has completed projects internationally in Europe.
Architecture and spatial design are at the core. Interior design is part of the service where clients want it — and on many projects, the two are inseparable.
The scope is comprehensive: architecture, spatial planning, material and finish selections, council submissions, contractor management, and completion. Projects are seen through.

Partners & Collaborators
A career of work across South Africa and beyond means decades of learning who is exceptional at what they do. JMA's consultant and supplier network is one of the most practical assets brought to any project: the right structural engineer for a mountain site, the right cabinet maker for a complex kitchen, the right tile supplier for a client who wants something they will not find anywhere else.
