The Northcliff Ridge project, designed by Jenny Mills Architects, brings together architecture and nature on a prime plot in Johannesburg's iconic Northcliff Ridge. With expansive views to the north and south, this residence blends indoor and outdoor living, creating spaces that invite moments of reflection, movement, and tranquility. The design vision captures the spirit of the landscape, balancing practical family needs with artistic expression. The home is built around Jenny Mills’ philosophy: "A home is a garden," where architecture simplifies and integrates with nature, forming a harmonious relationship between the built environment and its surroundings.
Architectural Vision
At the heart of the Northcliff Ridge design is the concept of lightness and flow. The entrance is a focal point, leading guests through thoughtfully curated moments, with a striking bridge as the design’s centrepiece. This bridge, both functional and aesthetic, connects the home’s levels and draws people into the space. Water features play a central role in the design, offering a sense of tranquility as it flows from the roof hanger and traverses the landscape. Retaining walls, made from natural materials like gabions, soften the street edge, while the planting of large trees adds to the feeling of a natural, forest-like landscape.
Landscape Design and Outdoor Spaces
The garden is integral to the design, creating a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors. Rather than a formal layout, the garden evokes a forest atmosphere, complementing the bold architectural lines of the house. A roof garden, planted with soft, wild elements, contrasts the structure’s geometry, providing a hidden sanctuary for relaxation. Large trees, some introduced via crane, frame key views, and indigenous plants like gardenia add sensory elements to the outdoor spaces. The garden is designed to evolve naturally over time, creating a visual journey that enhances the home’s connection to its environment.
Interior Design and Family Living
Inside, the home is crafted for modern family life, with spaces designed for both work and relaxation. The penthouse level captures morning light and panoramic views, creating a private retreat for the homeowners. Bedrooms and living areas are positioned to maximize views, while practical features like ample storage, integrated solar power, and battery backup ensure functionality. The home prioritizes family living with shared outdoor areas, a games room, and secure, well-integrated utility spaces, including a garage for up to six cars. Every detail is designed to offer comfort, security, and an intimate connection to nature.
This project exemplifies Jenny Mills’ approach to architecture, where every element is considered to enhance the relationship between home and garden, making the Northcliff Ridge residence a truly unique living experience.
